I’m looking at changing my car. I’m not 100% sure yet, so don’t be disappointed if I don’t. I have a history of changing my mind about large transactions at the last minute. Also I’ve got attached to the little thing so I might not let go just yet.
Having said that it’s a Suzuki Zen. I bought it in May 2006, number is KB series. Sold and serviced by AMW. It does about 11km per liter in the city and about 15 outside.
It has not been driven by a lady doctor, mostly by me and I’m a good driver.
It has 3M tint and a decent sound system. It has a few small scratches (to be realistic) which I will be painting in a week or so.
It just went over 13,000km since I’m a geek and I don’t get out much.
I’m expecting LKR1,200,000.

One of the things I noticed at the last SQL Server Sri Lanka User Group meeting was, unawareness of IMPLICIT Transaction mode. Almost all were knew about AutoCommit and EXPLICIT modes but very few were aware of IMPLICIT mode. Are you aware of it? Then how often you use it?
The Difference between IMPLICT and EXPLICT is simple. EXPLICIT mode allows us to start the transaction wherever we want by using BEGIN TRAN statement. In IMPLICIT mode, the transaction automatically starts base on some T-SQL statements. Some of the statements are CREATE, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, ALTER TABLE. See the BOL for whole list. As EXPLICIT mode, either COMMIT or ROLLBACK is required to complete the transaction.
1: USE Northwind
2: GO
3:
4: SET IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS ON
5: SET XACT_ABORT ON
6:
7: CREATE TABLE dbo.EmployeeAllowances
8: (EmployeeId int REFERENCES dbo.Employees(EmployeeID) NOT NULL,
9: MonthAndYear datetime NOT NULL,
10: Allowance money NOT NULL)
11:
12:
13: INSERT INTO dbo.EmployeeAllowances
14: (EmployeeId, MonthAndYear, Allowance)
15: VALUES
16: (100, getdate(), 450.00)
17:
18:
19: COMMIT TRAN
The SET IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS ON tells the system to set the transaction mode to IMPLICIT. In above code, transaction starts with CREATE TABLE statement. Since I have turned XACT_ABORT on, transaction rolls back at any run-time error. If no run-time error, transaction is committed at COMMIT statement. In this case, everything is rolled back since INSERT statement raises an error.

I got another Monday morning shocker as fuel prices were hiked up again. This is the 6th time this year according to my fuel log. Here are a few ideas on what you can do about it.
- The right tire pressure is a small thing but you might be wasting fuel on drag if your tires are under pressure.
- The quality of the fuel varies from shed to shed. If your drive is not smooth chances are there are impurities in the fuel. Change the shed.
- Check spark plugs and the fuel filter.
- Look into fuel and engine oil additives that claim to increase fuel efficiency. I’ve tried X1R which seemed to improve performance but no change in fuel efficiency.
- I’ve heard that nano tech fuel saver has some savings but no direct experience on it yet.
- Tinting helped me a lot by cutting down the air conditioning usage.
- Alloy wheels might help a bit but wider tires would counter any efficiency gained.
- A high pass air filter might help, then again keeping your current one clean would also help.
- Driving style has a lot to do with fuel economy. Accelerating and breaking too fast gulps down a lot of fuel.
Any more tips?

I just tried twitter last week and was blown
away! This is one really really cool service.
For me the coolest part about it is the SMS/Texting feature. For those who haven't
used it yet, think of it as a service which lets you SMS/Text all your
friends by sending an SMS to just a single number that twitter gives.
Twitter then goes out and updates everyone on your list by sending them SMS plus updating
a whole lot of other places like your Facebook profile, your blog...
Other features include sending the message from the Twitter website or even from a
downloadable app (imagine that FREE SMS), if you want to you can send a message to
just one friend.
Note to Sri Lankan users, this works find on Dialog but a few of my friends on
Mobitel had trouble getting setup. If any of you get this working with Mobitel please
let me know.
Once you have created a twitter account go to http://twitter.com/merill and
'follow me' to get my twitter updates.

I don’t know about you but I think supermarket cordials suck. First most brands start off with a decent mix then they slowly dilute it down until sales drop, then they come back thicker but at a higher cost.
I’ve tried almost all of them. MD Nelli and mixed fruit was great to start with but soon went down in taste and went up in price. KVC guava was and is still good, their mix fruit not so good.
There is a place affectionately named as The Jam Factory. Which is better than the official name of Fruits and Vegetables Private Limited. But their juices are good and almost half price of what you pay for a supermarket sucker.
The Jam Factory is down Buthgamuwa Road off Rajagiriya. You can turn in your washed jam and cordial bottles and I think they give you a discount. Very green of them.
Anyway that is my juicy tip for the day.
